In a DC power system, certain components require protection to ensure safe and reliable operation. The following requirements must be met for the protective measures:
1. Protective circuits should be installed in key areas such as the battery outlet circuit, the DC side of the charging device’s output, DC feeder circuits, and the battery test discharge circuit. These circuits are essential to prevent damage from overcurrent or short-circuit conditions.
2. For protection, DC circuit breakers or fuses should be used. These devices are specifically designed to handle direct current and provide effective fault isolation.
3. When using a combination of DC circuit breakers and fuses in a cascaded configuration, specific coordination rules must be followed to ensure proper operation:
- If a fuse is placed downstream of a DC circuit breaker, the fuse’s rated current should be at least twice that of the circuit breaker. This ensures that the fuse will not blow before the circuit breaker can respond to a fault.
- Conversely, if a DC circuit breaker is placed upstream of a fuse, its rated current should be four times or more than that of the fuse. This helps prevent unnecessary tripping and ensures selective coordination.
4. The design and configuration of all protective devices must be based on calculated short-circuit currents. This ensures that the system meets the necessary criteria for reliability, selectivity, sensitivity, and speed in fault detection and response.
5. Protection systems can employ various types of protection, including instantaneous over-current, short-time delay over-current, and inverse-time over-current protection. These methods allow for flexible and accurate fault handling depending on the system’s needs.
By following these guidelines, the DC system can maintain stability and safety under different operating conditions, reducing the risk of equipment failure and ensuring continuous power supply.
