The MPV market in China has long been dominated by popular international brands. Models like the GL8, Odyssey, and Dejie from various joint ventures consistently enjoy strong sales, often outperforming their competitors in terms of profitability, even when compared to other vehicles within the same brand. Interestingly, while the Korean automotive industry also offers MPVs, many of these models have struggled to gain traction in the Chinese market. A prime example is the Kia Jiale, shown here in this image. Despite being imported, its sales figures remain lackluster, and you rarely see it on the streets.
Allow me to provide some context on this vehicle. It’s a seven-seater MPV available in five different configurations. With a total length of 4525mm, width of 1805mm, height of 1605mm, and a wheelbase of 2750mm, it’s not a particularly large vehicle. However, its design is sleek and modern, giving it a commanding presence. Inside, the actual passenger space feels surprisingly spacious, especially with its 2+2+3 seating arrangement, which provides a contemporary aesthetic.

The car features LED taillights, offering excellent visibility at night. However, the headlights are not LED, which might disappoint some potential buyers. Under the hood, the standard engine is a 2.0-liter unit producing 152 horsepower. While this power output may suffice for an MPV of this class, it’s not particularly impressive. All models come equipped with an automatic transmission. The starting guide price is around 160,800 yuan, though discounts bring it down to approximately 140,000 yuan. Considering it’s an imported MPV, the value-for-money proposition is fairly decent.
Moving inside, the cabin design is relatively straightforward, lacking the refinement typically expected from either a family car or an MPV. Automatic transmission is standard across the range, yet the absence of a central touchscreen is a glaring oversight. Additionally, the panoramic sunroof is not a standard feature. If Kia could integrate these elements—such as adding a central control screen, a panoramic sunroof, and leather seats—it might significantly enhance the car’s appeal and competitive edge.

In MPVs, the third-row seating area is crucial, and the Jiale doesn’t disappoint. The seats are well-designed, though the side seats are slightly wider, leaving the middle position rather cramped. This design choice reflects a pragmatic approach, given that full occupancy situations are rare. Still, if someone needs to sit in the middle, they might find the positioning uncomfortable. Overall, the car’s pricing remains relatively high, and its poor sales performance is likely tied to its brand identity. Many consumers associate Kia with lower-end vehicles, making it challenging to compete against more established MPV brands in this segment.

To summarize, while the Kia Jiale offers a solid set of features and a competitive price point, its limited brand appeal continues to hinder its success in the Chinese market. If Kia could address some of the shortcomings in its interior design and marketing strategy, this MPV might stand a better chance of capturing consumer interest.
