Hancheng semiconductor equipment spending the largest market

The International Semiconductor Equipment Materials Industry Association (SEMI) expects that South Korea’s semiconductor equipment spending will exceed the US$10 billion mark this year, reaching US$11.48 billion (RMB36.57 billion), and surpassing North America to become the world’s largest semiconductor device spending market.

According to the mid-year forecast of semiconductor equipment capital expenditure announced by SEMI, the output value of global semiconductor equipment this year will be approximately US$42.38 billion, down 2.6% year-on-year, but it will still be the fourth highest in the calendar year.

SEMI estimates that Korea’s semiconductor equipment spending will reach 11.48 billion U.S. dollars this year, an increase of 32.6% year-on-year, and will leapfrog to the world’s largest market. At the same time, Taiwan’s expenditure amounted to US$9.26 billion, an increase of 8.6% year-on-year, ranking the second largest market in the world.

The amount of spending in North America, Japan, Europe, and China will decrease at the same pace as last year.

SEMI said that strong demand for mobile devices such as tablet PCs and smart phones has driven demand for semiconductor equipment purchases to continue to increase. It is expected that the output value of global semiconductor equipment in 2013 is expected to climb to US$46.71 billion, an increase of more than 10% annually. South Korea, North America, and Taiwan will continue to be the top three semiconductor device spending markets in the world.
