Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LT3690 , a synchronous step-down switching regulator that accepts 36V inputs, which delivers up to 4A of continuous output current at 93% efficiency. Operating over a VIN range of 3.9V to 36V, the LT3690 provides 60V transient protection, making it ideal for load dump and cold crank conditions common in automotive applications. The LT3690 's Burst Mode operation requires only 70uA of quiescent current for applications such as automotive or telecom systems, as these applications require always-on operation and optimal battery life. The switching frequency is user programmable from 170kHz to 1.5MHz, allowing designers to optimize efficiency while avoiding critical noise sensitive bands. Its 4mm x 6mm QFN-26 package combined with high switching frequency allows the use of small external inductors and capacitors, providing a compact, thermally efficient solution.

The LT3690 features a high efficiency 5.5A, 90mΩ high side switch with the necessary boost diodes, oscillators, control and logic circuitry integrated into a single chip. The 30mΩ internal synchronous power switch increases efficiency and eliminates the need for an external clamped Schottky diode. Low ripple Burst Mode operation maintains high efficiency at low output current while maintaining output ripple below 15mVPK-PK. The special design approach enables high efficiency over a wide input voltage range, and the device's current mode topology enables fast transient response and excellent loop stability. Other features include external synchronization (from 170kHz to 1.5MHz), power good marking and robust short circuit protection.

Available in 1,000-piece quantities, the LT3690EUFE is priced at $4.95 each. The LT3690IUFE is tested to operate over the operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C and is priced at $5.45 each in 1,000-piece quantities. All versions of the device are available from stock.
