Samsung HDD shipments or Super Toshiba in the second half

According to sources from hard disk manufacturers, Samsung’s HDD shipments are expected to surpass Toshiba in the second half of the year due to the strategy of bringing its own production of hard drives to IT products such as its notebooks.

Toshiba ranked fourth in HDD shipments in 2009 with a market share of 13.3%, lagging behind Seagate, Western Digital, and Hitachi. Samsung's HDD shipments in 2009 were only 51.64 million, with a share of 9.2%. However, according to statistics released by IDC in the first quarter of this year, Samsung HDD shipments have rapidly increased to 15.5 million units (share 9.5%), slightly behind Toshiba's 17.5 million units (share 10.7%).

Moreover, Samsung is also using its price strategy to obtain more orders from PC makers, and their hard disk shipment target this year is to double the base of 50 million last year to 100 million.

However, Toshiba also has confidence in the future shipments of hard drives. Although the demand for 1.8-inch hard drives is still declining, they believe that 2.5-inch hard drive shipments will see growth in the fourth quarter.
