The new lie detector robot counter-terrorism: the suspect can be found on the toe

According to the British "Daily Mirror" website reported on December 31, 2016, this device called "Real-Time Real Evaluation Automatic Virtual Agent System" (AVATAR) has begun testing at the Canadian Border Services Agency.

It is hoped that this new technology will help identify terrorists, smugglers and criminals.

Aaron Elkins, who was involved in the development of the system, said: "The AVATAR system has been tested at laboratories, airports and border crossings."

He said: "This system is fully prepared for missions to help curb the influx of smuggled goods, prevent escaped criminals, identify potential terrorists, and initiate many other functions to safeguard international border security."

The robot uses eye sensors, motion and pressure sensors, and other software to detect people's various external signs to test if they are lying. There is also a foot pad to find out if the subject is bending the toes because they are uncomfortable.

This kind of courteous, two-language machine will ask the passengers a series of questions, such as "Do you have fruit or vegetables in your baggage?" or "Do you carry a weapon with you?"

It also raises some insignificant questions to help distinguish whether the person answering the question is simply nervous or lying.

The robot will prompt the passengers who may be lying for further inspection by the border security personnel.

The University of Arizona introduced the system for the first time in 2012. Since then, researchers have been developing technology. So far, the robot has been ready to be deployed to the international border.

Elkins, who started participating in the development of this robot when he was pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona, said that the AVATAR system is much like airport check-in equipment or self-checkout equipment in grocery stores. However, the device has a "face" on the screen that can present various problems to the passenger and detect various physiological and behavioral changes of the passenger during the test.

He said: "This system can detect changes in the eye, sound, movement and posture to determine the potential risks."

According to Elkins, the device can even detect the curvature of people's toes. He hopes that this software will not be used for security in the future.

He said: "We have realized that it can be used not only for border security, but also for law enforcement, job interviews and other areas related to human resources work."

Elkins finally added: "We are continuing to improve the system, for example using big data analysis technology to analyze the collected data, which will make the AVATAR system a potential use machine in many industries."
