China ranks first in the world China’s hydropower installed capacity exceeds 200 million kilowatts

From the national hydropower publicity work conference sponsored by the National Energy Administration and other organizations, it was learned that up to now, the total installed capacity of hydropower in the country has exceeded 200 million kilowatts, ranking first in the world. The relevant person in charge of the National Energy Administration stated here that hydropower has played an increasingly prominent role in adjusting the existing energy supply structure.

Since the reform and opening up, China's energy supply has provided an important guarantee and support for the rapid and steady economic growth. However, for a long time, China’s energy supply has been dominated by fossil energy. The transformation and upgrading of the economy requires low-carbon development and requires clean energy, and the development of hydropower is in conformity with this historical trend. In 2004 , the total installed capacity of hydropower in China exceeded the 100 million kilowatt mark and continued to rank first in the world.

The economic data shows the urgency for China to vigorously develop hydropower and achieve energy supply structure adjustment. In 2009 , China’s total energy consumption was approximately 3.1 billion tons of standard coal, of which commercialized non-fossil energy consumption such as hydropower, nuclear power, and wind power was approximately 230 million tons of standard coal, accounting for approximately 8.3% of total energy consumption. According to the 2020 China's total energy consumption reached 4.5 billion tons of standard coal design, in order to achieve the goal of 15% non-fossil energy, hydropower installed capacity should reach 350 million kilowatts, wind power installed capacity should reach 150 million kilowatts, solar power installed capacity should reach 2000 Million kilowatts, biomass power generation capacity should reach 30 million kilowatts, nuclear power capacity should reach 80 million kilowatts.

Shi Lishan, deputy director of the New Energy and Renewable Energy Division of the National Energy Administration, said that hydropower installed capacity has exceeded 200 million kilowatts, which has effectively promoted the adjustment of the energy supply structure. By 2020 , if China’s hydropower has successfully installed 350 million kilowatts, China will The energy supply structure will be considerably improved.
