Speed up the development of "communicating robots" and promote the development of "human-machine cooperation" type intelligent robots

The rapid integration of industrial robots is reshaping the competitive landscape of China's manufacturing sector in ways never seen before. As robotics technology advances and market demands evolve, China has started exploring the concept of "community robots" and promoting the development of "human-robot collaboration" systems. These innovations are expected to redefine how humans and machines interact in both industrial and service environments. This insight was shared at the second high-end forum on robotics and smart manufacturing held in Hefei, Anhui Province. Experts highlighted that while robotics has already made significant contributions in areas like manufacturing upgrades, healthcare, defense, research, and resource exploration, there are still many challenges to overcome. Current robotic systems face limitations. Industrial robots often struggle with real-time perception and adaptability, performing only predictable tasks in controlled settings. Service robots lack the necessary human-robot interaction capabilities, making it difficult for them to handle even simple tasks like delivering meals or greeting guests. Meanwhile, special-purpose robots tend to rely heavily on remote control, lacking autonomous sensing and decision-making abilities. According to Academician Ding Han from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a leading expert in electronic engineering, communicative robots represent a new generation of intelligent systems. These robots are designed to be highly adaptable to their environment and capable of forming multi-robot teams that can work collaboratively. More importantly, they can understand human intentions and engage in natural, rule-based interactions with people. Ding Han explained that communicative robots are not just about automation—they focus on enhancing human-robot cooperation. They can perceive dynamic, unstructured environments more effectively than traditional robots and support flexible, real-time operations. This makes them ideal for applications where adaptability and human interaction are crucial. China has already begun implementing communicative robots in large-scale projects, such as the production of wind turbine blades. In one notable example, a 60-meter-long blade was processed using a team of multi-robot systems. Looking ahead, communicative robots are expected to play a key role in rehabilitation technologies, offering features like intent recognition, bionic assistance, and balance control. These advancements will allow robots to actively sense user needs and assist in personalized rehabilitation programs. At the recent forum, over 300 industry leaders, researchers, and entrepreneurs gathered to discuss the future of robotics and smart manufacturing. It was also announced that the National Natural Science Foundation of China will launch a major research project on communicative robots in 2017, with a duration of eight years. The third batch of guidelines is expected to be released next March, signaling continued investment and growth in this promising field.
