Speed up the development of "communicating robots" and promote the development of "human-machine cooperation" type intelligent robots

The rapid adoption of industrial robots is reshaping the competitive landscape of China's manufacturing sector, bringing about transformative changes in productivity and efficiency. As robotics technology advances and market demands evolve, China has begun exploring the concept of "community robots" and is actively promoting the development of intelligent robots that emphasize "human-robot collaboration." This shift reflects a growing focus on creating more flexible, adaptive, and interactive robotic systems. This insight was shared at the second high-level forum on robotics and smart manufacturing held in Hefei, Anhui Province, where industry experts highlighted the evolving role of robotics in various sectors. According to reports, robots are playing a crucial role in addressing challenges related to manufacturing upgrades, healthcare services, national defense, scientific research, and resource exploration. However, current robotic systems still face significant limitations. For instance, industrial robots often lack strong online perception and real-time processing capabilities, restricting them to performing predictable tasks in highly structured environments. Service robots, on the other hand, struggle with effective human-robot interaction, making it difficult for them to handle even simple tasks like meal delivery or greeting guests. Similarly, special-purpose robots generally lack active sensing and autonomous control, often relying heavily on remote operation for specific functions. According to Academician Ding Han from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an expert in electronic engineering, communicative robots represent a new frontier in robotics. These robots are designed to be highly adaptable to their environment and capable of forming multi-robot systems that can work together in teams. Moreover, they can interact naturally with humans, understanding human behavior and operating collaboratively within defined rules. "Compared to traditional intelligent robots, communicative robots excel in dynamic, unstructured environments and offer greater flexibility," Ding explained. "They can better interpret human intentions and enable seamless human-robot collaboration." Ding also mentioned that China has already started deploying communicative robots in the production of large wind turbine blades, achieving a successful multi-robot collaborative operation for 60-meter-long blades. In the field of rehabilitation robotics, these communicative robots are expected to develop advanced features such as intent recognition, bionic assistance, and balance control. This means they will be able to sense user intentions, adapt to human movements, and provide active support during rehabilitation sessions. During the forum, over 300 experts, entrepreneurs, and researchers from universities, research institutions, and companies across the country engaged in discussions on the future of robotics and smart manufacturing. The event also revealed that the National Natural Science Foundation of China will launch a major research project on communicative robots in 2017, with a planned duration of eight years. The third batch of guidelines for this initiative is expected to be released in March next year.
