The production line, which began operations ahead of schedule, is now capable of producing high-resolution screens that are setting new standards in visual quality.
The ceremony, held at the New High-tech Zone in Hefei, saw the delivery of the first batch of products to major international clients such as Samsung, LG, Vizio, Skyworth, Konka, Hisense, Changhong, TPV, Xiaomi, and Haier. These included 75-inch 8K60Hz and 75-inch 8K120Hz displays, showcasing the potential of 8K technology in both consumer and commercial markets.
BOE's 10.5-generation line, which was built independently in 2015 with an investment of 45.8 billion yuan, is the highest generation line globally. It produces large-sized ultra-high-definition LCD panels, primarily for 65-inch and larger screens, with a monthly capacity of 120,000 glass substrates. This innovation not only boosts China’s position in the global display market but also reduces reliance on imported technology.
Liu Xiaodong, President of BOE Corporation, emphasized that the mass production of the 10.5-generation line would drive rapid growth in the 8K market, making 2018 the "Year of 8K." With more 8K content and TVs entering the market, demand for ultra-high-definition displays is expected to rise significantly. By 2018, 65-inch 8K TVs are anticipated to become a key product in the market, offering consumers an unparalleled viewing experience.
What makes 8K so special? With a resolution of 7680 × 4320, it contains 33 million pixels—four times that of 4K and 16 times that of Full HD. Watching events like the Olympic swimming competition in 8K allows viewers to see every detail, from the athlete's expression to the water droplets on their face, creating an immersive experience that surpasses even live viewing.
Beyond home entertainment, 8K has vast applications in sectors like healthcare, where doctors can use high-precision 8K imaging to improve surgical accuracy. In museums and art galleries, 8K displays bring masterpieces to life with stunning clarity. Security monitoring, sports events, and conferences also benefit from the superior resolution and detail.
BOE's "8425 strategy" highlights its vision for the future: promoting 8K, universalizing 4K, replacing 2K, and leveraging 5G. As the 5G era approaches, BOE aims to lead the entire industry chain, collaborating with partners to develop 8K standards and accelerate adoption.
The 10.5-generation line represents the pinnacle of current display technology. The glass substrates used in this line measure 3370mm × 2940mm, enabling the production of large, efficient, and high-quality displays. Unlike previous generations, the 10.5 line achieves nearly 95% cutting efficiency, allowing for larger screens without compromising cost-effectiveness.
