HTC terminates the development of Google Daydream all-in-one, will Vive Focus go global?

Oculus Go is priced at $200 in the U.S. market, while its price in China is still pending official announcement from Xiaomi. This partnership between Oculus and Xiaomi could have a significant impact on HTC, as Xiaomi is expected to launch a Chinese version of the Oculus Go. The device has already made an impression in the global market, and its entry into China may intensify competition among VR headsets. In late 2017, HTC decided to stop development of the Google Daydream all-in-one headset for the global market and instead launched the ViveFocus specifically for the Chinese market. It was officially released in January 2018. Since then, there have been ongoing questions about whether ViveFocus will eventually be available worldwide. HTC has provided only vague responses, leaving many curious about the company’s future plans. According to a recent interview with Wang Congqing, general manager of HTC China, the decision to expand ViveFocus globally might depend on its performance in the Chinese market. Wang mentioned that HTC is seriously considering this move and emphasized that if the Chinese market reacts positively, there would be no reason to limit the product to one region. This suggests that the success of ViveFocus in China could be a key factor in determining its global availability. Originally, HTC had planned to collaborate with Google on a Daydream-powered all-in-one headset, but that project was ultimately canceled. If HTC decides to sell the ViveFocus globally, it could create direct competition with Google in the VR software distribution space, particularly through ViveWave. Additionally, the ViveFocus would face strong competition from other devices like the Oculus Go, Lenovo Mirage Solo, and even the upcoming Oculus Santa Cruz. Despite not having a presence in the Chinese market, Oculus has found a way to enter through its partnership with Xiaomi. This collaboration highlights how the VR industry is becoming increasingly competitive, with major players like HTC, Oculus, and Lenovo vying for market share. As more companies release their own all-in-one VR headsets, consumers are likely to benefit from greater choice and innovation in the space.
