Gennum Introduces First Single-Chip Transceiver Solution to Accelerate 10G EPON Deployment

On October 19, 2009, Gennum introduced the GN7350, the first 10G EPON transceiver chip for next-generation PON systems. This product provides users with a single transceiver chip solution to help users reduce power consumption and reduce costs when upgrading ONUs.

The GN7350 is designed to meet the needs of customers. Users can test 10GEPON systems as early as possible, with special market requirements. The GN7350 uses Gennum's industry-leading CDR (clock and data recovery) technology and laser drive technology to build model system tests for users. Through a large number of 10G optical network solution test and verification, Gennum claims that users can use the GN7350 with confidence in the next-generation optical network design.

According to Gennum, the GN7350's built-in Gennum CDR technology eliminates channel noise in PON systems and improves the performance of 10GEPON. In addition, through the secondary timing of high-speed signals, the GN7350's built-in CDR function ensures high power budget and low signal jitter. This provides more space for the design of the 10GEPON system based on the IEEE802.3av standard, simplifies the design of the optical module, and also supports product interconnection between different MAC manufacturers. Gennum's long-term technology-leading CDR makes it easier to integrate this functionality into the chip while still meeting the structural cost and low-power requirements of passive optical networking systems.

Gennum Optical Product Manager Justin Abbott said: "The GN7350 is another leading technology product developed by Gennum for the optical networking market. The product uses a single-chip solution. The 10G burst mode receiver will reduce the BOM to make design easier and help the next generation. EPON system design improves a faster and more reliable deployment. The GN7350 single-chip solution will provide customers with time and market advantages as they are just beginning to deploy the next generation 10GEPON network."
