Ayrton MagicPanel 602 teardown evaluation

Because MagicPanel is a product that is difficult to classify, it is difficult to test it according to a certain standard, but we still look at it in all aspects.

Elton provided the test fixture through a US distributor, and the following test reports are from this monomer. The test was done in a 115V 60Hz power environment (but the lamp can operate at 110-240V 50/60Hz).

Light source and optics

The MagicPanel 602 uses 36 four-color (red, green, blue, white) LED beads to form an array in a 6 x 6 arrangement. The output power is not specifically indicated, but it seems that each 10W, they are mounted directly to the board (see Figure 1).

â–³ Figure 1

If you look closely, you can see that each of the beads is arranged at a 45 degree angle. This will ensure that the light of each color is visible in all directions and angles. It is more apparent from what is seen in Figure 2.

â–³ Figure 2

So far, the heat dissipation of LEDs is still a long-standing problem, so the heat generated by an array must be very large. The LED bead is mounted directly on the motherboard, so the task of cooling is given to the four fans on the back of the fuselage (Figure 3).

The surface of the lamp bead is designed to be flat with no lens attached. The overall lens is a cavity structure that ensures good light mixing. Figure 4 shows what a single lens looks like, and Figure 5 shows how it is installed. The lamp uses a fixed focal length, no focus, and each of the 36 beads is a narrow beam. You might say that the square light is also a square beam? But in fact, the spot of each lamp bead is round. Within 3 meters, they are arranged in a square shape, so the spot does show a square, but as the distance gradually becomes longer, it will become a uniform circle. Spot. It is difficult to achieve a circular spot regardless of the initial shape arrangement.

Output

I push the brightness to full. After setting it to white light, I measure it according to the system's built-in color temperature correction function. As I said before, the optical output capability of a luminaire is part of its many effects. Just like a beam of light, we want to see the effects of color, pattern, contour, etc. on the premise of good optical output performance.

I got the following results based on the system's built-in white light, full light, and 15.6° beam angle. At the same time, I also measured the optical utilization of different colors.

Obviously, when the ratios of these colors are added together, the result is more than 100%, which means that the luminaire will increase the output power when a certain color is output separately, and all the colors will be returned to the gain when they are used. The previous state. This technology can better improve the color saturation of LED lamps.

LED control

The dimming is smooth and the square dimming curve is used (see Figure 6). Due to the 8-bit dimming control, performance is less than 15%. After 10 minutes of turning on the light, the brightness dropped to a level of 83%, and then between 80% and 85%. Its strobe rate can range from 1.15Hz up to 25 Hz.

Color and pixel control

Figures 7 and 8 show the spectra for full-color output and 2700K color temperature output, respectively. This is a very typical RGBW combination with bands concentrated between 450nm and 650nm.

Elton offers many ways to control the color change of all the beads. You can choose to use 160 channel modes so you can control the four colors of each bead. In today's test, I am running in 20 channel mode, you can change the color of all pixels at the same time, and you can also use built-in effects, built-in patterns and built-in programs.

The system allows overlays to use preset pattern programs and preset color change programs, either of which can be static or dynamic. For example, you can use a square pattern to "hook" the light, the interior is a dynamic rainbow color, or it can be a strobe plus background color plus a dynamic rotation pattern, etc. In short, there are many possibilities, all you need to do is Leave plenty of programming time to discover these complex effects. There are many people who imagine using multiple MagicPanel 602 for pattern stitching and matrices.

Sports performance

The MagicPanel 602 provides continuous, non-polar rotation in both horizontal and vertical directions, which is independent of normal horizontal and vertical control channels. So you can exercise it as a normal fixture in the 540° and 268° range, or just let it go.

After testing, in the horizontal movement, the robot arm takes 3 seconds to complete the 540° rotation and 1.5 seconds to complete the 180° journey. In the vertical direction, 2.6 degrees in 1.6 seconds and 180 degrees in 1.2 seconds. In a fast, continuous motion, there are some slight deviations, but the fixture can automatically correct it. The 16-bit control is very smooth. Figure 9 is its slip ring motor.

noise

The biggest noise-generating component of the MagicPanel 602 is the motion motor, so its noise control is very good.

Homing/initialization time

A cold boot requires a boot time of 42 seconds, and a reset by the DMX command takes 28 seconds. The performance at the time of resetting is very bad, and the luminaire will have a flashing phenomenon.

Power, electrical and control

Under the 119V 60Hz power supply, the MagicPanel 602 uses 5.02A, consumes 596W, and has a power factor of 0.99. The LED control section and associated electronic drive components have only two stepper motors, and the other two motors are visible in Figures 10 and 11.

The base is relatively empty, only the wiring of the power supply and signal system. In addition to DMX, it can also receive Ethernet ArtNer and KlingNet protocol signals, and integrates LumenRadio's DMX function. The manufacturer said that the follow-up products will also support the RDM protocol (see Figure 12).

â–³ Figure 12, Figure 13, Figure 14

Figures 13 and 14 show the liquid crystal display and menu system using Neutrik's new PowerCon True1 connector. The aluminum chassis and the injection molded panel make the installation process very simple, but since there is no light hook, I have not tested it for convenience.

Conclusion

As I said at the outset, this is a difficult product. MagicPanel 602 is a very infrequently used effect fixture, unless you have a lot of them to form an array, otherwise you can't use a single light to make any real effect.

With this in mind, in the design effect and control process, only the number of channels to expand it can make its use meaningful, and only then can you get full value. I will use this picture as the end, whether it can be used by you or by yourself.
