Terminal application/image chip bidding cage virtual reality welcomes commercial first year

Samsung, Sony, HTC and other mobile phone brands have listed virtual reality display devices as new products to be developed in 2016, while chip makers such as Infineon and NVIDIA have recently launched 3D imagery. The detector and the new generation of rendering software can further enhance the visual effects of virtual reality and attract strong momentum for the commercial development of virtual reality.

Virtual Reality (VR) headsets appeared in the 1980s. In recent years, many manufacturers have invested in development, but they have been suffering from price and technology issues and have not been able to successfully enter the market. However, in major brands such as HTC. After Oculus and Sony launched new VR products in 2016, this situation is expected to change (Figure 1).

Technical bottleneck breaks VR/AR into commercial first year

According to the International Data Information (IDC) study, in 2016, VR and Augmented Reality (AR) are expected to improve technical limitations and break through the immature application of the past, and enter the first year of commercialization.

Figure 2 Yan Lanxin, senior research manager of IDC personal computer peripherals, believes that user experience and price are the key to the growth of virtual reality.

Yan Lanxin (Fig. 2), senior research manager of IDC PC/PC peripherals, said that in the past, VR was limited by device design, technology maturity and hardware price. It was dangerous, expensive and unrealistic in application. Although there were products launched in the past, many of them have not been successfully developed. However, with the advancement of VR technology, it is expected that some major manufacturers such as HTC, Oculus and Sony will launch related products in 2016.

Yan Lanxin further explained that VR mainly targets the consumer market, such as game entertainment, art, education, etc.; AR is the integration of virtual and real world, and more focus on the enterprise market, such as car navigation, reversing assistance and interior design; It can be regarded as the first year of VR and AR application outbreaks, but whether the application continues to develop, it is necessary to consider factors such as user experience, price and usage context, whether it can meet consumer expectations.

Coincidentally, for the development of VR, the MIC MIC recently announced the top ten trends of high-tech industry in 2016. It also pointed out that VR will enter a new milestone in 2016, and can see three types of VR headsets in the consumer market. Device.

Figure 3 Zhang Qi, consultant and director of the MIC industry, said that the virtual reality ecosystem will be formed in 2016 and will be the first year of commercial use.

Zhang Qi (Fig. 3), consultant and director of the MIC industry, said that the VR ecosystem will be formed and 2016 will be the first year of commercial use.

Zhang Qi said that the major manufacturers are actively deploying VR software and hardware platforms, so the VR industry ecosystem is gradually taking shape. In 2016, there will be three different forms of VR devices, such as Samsung Gear VR2 with mobile phones and HTC Vive with computers. Oculus Rift and Sony PlayStaTIon with game console. At this stage, the application of VR in the consumer market is still dominated by games and audio-visual entertainment, while in the commercial market, product design/displays such as window display and medical applications are expected. In the future, 3D concerts, virtual museums, and VR applications such as housing agencies.

Zhang Qi further explained that in addition to commercial progress, VR will also have some new technologies, such as algorithm, eye tracking technology, image display technology and screen update rate, but today VR still has to overcome the challenges of new technologies; In addition to the development of VR by international companies, Chinese manufacturers and some Taiwanese venture capital companies have also invested in this field.

In addition to the brand's big mills, semiconductor chip makers are also actively in this field, and recently launched new chips, in order to grab the market in the first year of VR commercial.

Infineon grabs VR business opportunity new 3D image sensor attack

Optimistic about the development prospects of VR, Infineon and Germany's pmd Technologies have jointly developed a new generation of three-dimensional (3D) image sensor chip REAL3 designed for mobile devices, which not only has a large reduction in size and power consumption compared with the previous generation. And each pixel uses a micro lens to improve optical sensitivity and create a more realistic VR and AR real-world imaging experience, which is expected to begin mass production in the first quarter of 2016.

It is reported that REAL3 includes RS1125C, IRS1645C and IRS1615C series products, which will be exhibited at the 2016 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which can realize extremely realistic VR and AR game experience. Game players can use the headset device in the game. The interaction between the hands and the living environment, the rest of the application also includes space measurement of the room and objects, indoor navigation, and the implementation of special photo effects.

Infineon pointed out that most applications of mobile devices require only 38,000 pixels of resolution, so the new series of 3D image sensor chips scale down the previous 100,000 pixel matrix, while other functional blocks, such as wafers. The region's analog/digital converters and performance range are optimized to further reduce system cost; and because of the reduced resolution, they can be combined with smaller, more affordable optical lenses.

In addition, the REAL3 series offers better optical sensitivity and lower power consumption, and its optical pixel sensitivity is twice that of the previous generation, representing only half the emitted light output, achieving the same excellent measurement level. As a result, mobile device camera system manufacturers can not only provide more cost-effective infrared light, but also halve the power consumption of the camera system. At the same time, the built-in electronic devices in this series also occupy a small space, allowing the mobile device to have a mini camera system, measuring 3D depth data, and quickly and realistically detecting the surrounding environment.

The IRS1125C components in this series will be in volume production in the first quarter of 2016, while the smaller IRS1645C and IRS1615C are expected to begin production in the second quarter of 2016. All three products are supplied in bare die, providing high design flexibility while reducing system cost.

In addition to Infineon, AMD is actively deploying the VR market with the high-end flagship graphics card Radeon R9 Fury series and LiquidVR virtual visual development tools, and NVIDIA has also introduced a new Iray rendering software to enhance VR visual effects.

Iray rendering software, VR visual effects and breakthrough

In order to improve design efficiency and design finished product realism, NVIDIA recently announced the launch of Iray rendering software, which will use plug-in (Plug-in) to support popular design software such as Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk Maya. Iray is currently available in the NVIDIA online store, and the development of hot VR applications will also show a more realistic visual effect through this rendering software.

Figure 4 Sandeep Gupte, senior director of NVIDIA's Professional Visualization Division, said that Iray combines PBR technology with the MDL database to create more realistic visual effects.

Sandeep Gupte (picture 4), senior director of NVIDIA's professional vision division, said that it is the goal of all designers to present products with photo-realism. To achieve this goal, the combination of light source and material is critical. To this end, Iray combines PBR (Physically Based Rendering) technology with the Material DefiniTIon Language (MDL) database to enable designers to achieve the desired results and make the design work smoother.

It is reported that PBR is a rendering technology based on the real world physical characteristics, which can simulate the light condition in the real environment. According to the different refraction and reflection of light in different materials and spaces, let the computer draw the 3D rendering. The 3D model is like the real world. At the same time, PBR is also interactive, the designer can adjust the angle of the object at the design time according to his own needs, in order to view the rendering results, and thus accelerate the workflow.

Gupte further pointed out that after the light is refracted and reflected by different surface materials, it will also bring different refractive index and reflectivity, resulting in a visually different experience. In order to present more realistic rendering results, NVIDIA has launched an MDL database that supports Iray.

At the same time, NVIDIA also announced the launch of the latest decentralized rendering solution, Iray Server, to save design costs and extend Iray applications to mobile devices. In other words, when the cost of building the enterprise is limited, and each workstation can be configured with high-end graphics card hardware, only one workstation with Iray Server can perform Iray rendering design on the workstation's server. And the devices connected to it can be rendered without the need for high-performance hardware specifications. Therefore, even a typical tablet or smart phone can be connected to the Iray server to perform rendering operations.

At present, Iray has been widely used in image rendering applications such as games, animation, movies, objects or architectural design, and the recent popular VR, its visual effects will also go up the next level through Iray, giving consumers a better vision. Experience.
