Maxim Integrated introduces two IO-Link reference designs to reduce design space

China, Beijing, August 19, 2014. Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces two new subsystem reference designs that provide high precision, low power proximity sensing (MAXREFDES27#) and enhanced distributed control (MAXREFDES36#) through a compact digital input hub.

Modern "intelligent" manufacturing relies heavily on high-speed automation and superior inspection capabilities, which in turn has led to a significant increase in demand for versatile, high-precision proximity detection. However, proximity detection is not an easy task, and the system requires multiple sensor inputs. The two new subsystems described here integrate the IO-Link® standard interface required for industrial applications, saving space. The MAXREFDES27# proximity detection sensor uses the IO-Link protocol to achieve efficient, two-way communication between the controller and the remote optical sensor. The MAXREFDES36# digital hub uses IO-Link protocol to enhance distributed control, placing 16 digital inputs near binary sensors, reducing the number of cables on the PLC side and dramatically reducing costs and achieving higher digital input densities.

MAXREFDES27# and MAXREFDES36# boards

MAXREFDES27# proximity detection sensor

The MAXREFDES27# IO-Link subsystem reference design allows the operator to adjust and calibrate the light proximity detection sensor for accuracy up to 14-bit resolution. The DC-DC low-power conversion circuit is included to effectively improve system efficiency. The design can be adjusted and calibrated for different surface and light levels.

High integration: Board integrated DC-DC converter, IO-Link transceiver, proximity detection sensor and Renesas RL78 microcontroller for efficiency, reliability and system configurability

Ultra-low power consumption: only 150mW (typ), low power consumption reduces heat consumption, improving reliability and extending working time

Reliable IO-Link performance: Provides self-configuring functionality, efficient two-way communication between sensors and control modules, and multiple protection mechanisms

· Tiny form factor: The printed circuit board (PCB) size of the entire design is 8.2mm x 31.5mm

MAXREFDES36# 16-Channel Digital Hub

Industrial control typically has a large number of input cables, from various sensors to digital input modules of programmable logic controllers (PLCs). This traditional architecture is difficult to troubleshoot and has high maintenance costs. The latest MAXREFDES36# IO-Link subsystem aggregates 16 digital inputs into a hub, eliminating the need for 15 cables to connect to the PLC. The subsystem consumes only 235mW and is 60% smaller than existing solutions. This space-saving digital hub allows manufacturers to place more digital inputs in each system controller, simplifying operational complexity, reducing maintenance costs, maintaining low-power operation, and extending uptime.

High integration: The board contains a DC-Dc Power converter, two 8-channel digital input serializers, an IO-Link transceiver, and a Renesas RL78 microcontroller

Reliable IO-Link performance: self-configuration, short-circuit and shutdown protection, overheat warning, and drive function

· Low power consumption: only 235mW (typical)

· Small size: The size of the solution is 53.75mm x 72mm, which can be placed in the standard DIN rail PCB bracket, which is 60% smaller than the existing solution.

Evaluation

· Maxim Integrated reference design manager David Andeen said: "Proximity detection and distributed control are two key elements of industrial transformation and upgrade. The combination of optical sensors and IO-Link protocol can support a variety of low-power sensors; digital input modules pass Reducing the number of cabling on the factory floor, while reducing costs, is also easy to maintain. MAXREFDES27# and MAXREFDES36# can help users achieve industrial design faster, better, reduce costs and improve overall plant performance."

price information

· The MAXREFDES27# and MAXREFDES36# boards are priced at $99. Schematic, layout files and firmware (including the IODD files required for IO-Link) are also available for free and are ready for immediate use.
