US Energy Agency announces suspension of L-win LED PAR38 lamp project evaluation

The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced that it will suspend the selection of LED PAR 38 lamps for halogen light bulbs in the Better Tomorrow Lighting Awards (L Awards). This is the second time to suspend the selection of PAR 38 lamps, according to the Department of Energy. The reason for the suspension is because the recent products have not met the power requirements. For the L Prize, the US Department of Energy has revised some of the requirements, but with regard to the efficacy requirement of 123 lumens per watt, the DOE statement is based on the requirements of the US Congress and cannot be modified.

The purpose of the L Award is to continue to extend the technical indicators of solid-state lighting, leading the solid-state lighting (SSL) industry to achieve higher energy efficiency. Philips Lighting won a performance requirement of 90 lumens per watt in 2011. It is speculated that the directional nature of PAR 38 lamps, relative to omnidirectional A-lamps, should enable manufacturers to make more efficient products.

The US Department of Energy suspended the PAR 38 competition for the first time in 2011 and considered it not suitable for the competition. In 2012, the competition for this project was re-launched, reducing the number of sample lamps provided and reducing the tolerance requirements for light output. Then in August last year, the L Award extended the project's maximum allowable beam pattern from 12° to 15°.

Despite this, the power requirements mandated by the US Congress have remained the same, and no company has entered the PAR 38 competition. The US Department of Energy said that the PAR 38 lamps listed on the market are far from achieving the goal. In fact, the best products on the market, with a performance of only 90 lumens per watt, prompted the Department of Energy to reassess the competition requirements.

The US Department of Energy said it would consider restarting PAR 38 competition in the future. In addition, the Congressional Act will allocate $5 million to the company that won the PAR 38 L award. In addition, the winner will have the opportunity to receive an order to sell a large winning light to the US government.
