2013 or will become the first year of OLED market, the industry expects to continue LCD development track

The application of OLED in the market began slowly in 2000. By 2004, PM-OLED began mass production, and the products were applied to MP3 players and mobile phone sub-panels. At that time, the market was bright, and the industry looked forward to the OLED's continuation of LCD development.

A long time ago, OLED was considered by the industry to be the next generation of display technology. However, the reality is cruel, and OLEDs have not developed as quickly as everyone expected. However, with the continuous advancement of display technology and the active participation of enterprises, in recent years, the enthusiasm of enterprises to invest in OLED is getting higher and higher, and 2013 is likely to become the first year of OLED market.

The application of OLED in the market began slowly in 2000. By 2004, PM-OLED began mass production, and the products were applied to MP3 players and mobile phone sub-panels. At that time, the market was bright, and the industry looked forward to the OLED's continuation of LCD development.

The development of LCDs has also started with small screens. Initially, with the breakthrough of process technology, the LCD production line has progressed from the 2nd generation line to the 5th generation line. Subsequently, the LCD production line achieved a generational jump almost every two years.

Initially, LCDs were only used in IT products such as computer monitors and notebook computers because of life issues. After the LCD 7 generation line was put into production, the products gradually penetrated into the TV and entered the home appliance market. From the small-volume production of LCDs to the mass production of small-sized products, it took less than two years, and the product expanded in less than a decade. At present, almost every year, the sales volume of various types of LCDs reaches 200 million units.

OLEDs began to be used in small-size products in 2004, and industry insiders generally believe that the OLED era is coming. At this time, some manufacturers' OLED panels were mass-produced. In 2006, AU Optronics officially mass-produced AM-OLED and successfully introduced it into mobile phone products. However, half a year later, AUO was unable to withstand the loss of AM-OLED and announced that it would stop production. In 2007, Chi Mei Electronics produced a subsidiary of AM-OLED, Qijing, which successfully produced larger-sized products and applied them to digital photo frames. During this period, Samsung's SMD company, which specializes in OLED production, also launched OLEDs for mobile phones. At the end of 2007, Sony officially sold OLED TVs, once again proclaiming the OLED era is coming. However, in 2008, under the influence of the financial turmoil, the development progress of AM-OLEDs by major manufacturers slowed down, but research continued. In 2009, SMD once again applied AM-OLED to mobile phones, but the market still did not recognize it.

Come back
At the end of 2010, SMD applied AM-OLED to Samsung and HTC smartphones. In 2011, SMD continued to develop AM-OLED panels for smartphone applications. In the second half of 2011, Nokia, Motorola, HTC and LG launched one or two mobile phones using AM-OLED screens respectively, which made the AM-OLED market once again lively.

In addition, Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Tab's second-generation product also uses AM-OLED as the screen, the size is 10.1 inches, which indicates that AM-OLED is involved in the tablet field, and the product application is gradually expanding. At the 2012 CES show, LG also demonstrated a 55-inch AM-OLED TV and is expected to be mass-produced in the second half of 2012. It is conceivable that in 2012, with the active investment of manufacturers, the price of AM-OLED will gradually decline, and the accessories will also be applied to a wide range of products.

In the future, OLEDs can be used on traditional displays, as well as on flexible displays. Because the product can be rolled up, it is more convenient to carry, and the screen size will be unbounded. At that time, innovative application products will appear in large numbers, and this digital family era is just around the corner.

OLED is optimistic about the future
At present, except for SMD, almost no other manufacturers mass-produce AM-OLED, and now the largest production line is 5.5 generation line, mass production in the second quarter of 2011. AUO and LG Display originally announced in early 2011 that they will have an AM-OLED production line in mid-2011, which is currently extended to 2012.
